Class Descriptions

Beginner Series / Bootcamp:
We sometimes call our first tango classes bootcamps, but really they are the fundamentals of tango. Sometimes we offer weekend bootcamps (see below) that cover all of the fundamentals in one weekend over four intensive classes. We always hold beginner classes with our weekly classes. The beginners series is a 6-week intensive basic training to get you ready for our Sunday and Thursday night social dance floor. You will learn walking, rocksteps, the cross, ochos, basic turns, musicality and intro to close embrace tango. No experience or partner necessary! Learning the basics that are the foundation for Argentine Tango will allow you to dance socially by the end of the series. Join us at the practica to practice what you’ve learned and on Sunday nights at our practilonga. Everyone needs the basics, so anyone wanting to brush up on those is welcome to signup. We also encourage men who are interested in learning following and women who are interested in leading to try the bootcamp from the other perspective.

What to bring, what to wear:
–   Wear comfortable clothes, light shirt or airy top in case it gets hot.
–   Bring sturdy, snug-fitting shoes with smooth leather soles if you have some, they are easier to pivot in.
–   Ladies, wear shoes with closed toes (for protection) and that fit snugly so you don’t step out of them. Again, leather soled shoes are best.
–   Shoes that aren’t so great for dancing: sneakers (unless for guys if they don’t have leather soled shoes), flipflops, clunky platform shoes, open-toed sandals, shoes without heel straps or (better) heel cups. Don’t worry too much about looking stylish, dance shoes have to be functional first.

Occasionally we offer a WEEKEND BEGINNER BOOTCAMP with our famous and distinguished teacher Robin Thomas! No experience required to attend the bootcamp and those who have completed the bootcamp as part of the 6-week series are welcome to do the weekend beginner bootcamp as a refresher course. Dancers of all levels are welcome, don’t miss an opportunity to take classes with Robin!

Intermediate / Level 1:
Intermediate / Level 1 classes are designed for those who are familiar with the basic steps covered in the beginner bootcamp, are eager to expand their dancing vocabulary, but need to work on technique. These classes will cover topics such as (but not limited to) the parada, right turn, musicality, vals, milonga, turn sequences, fundamental technique, as well as more challenging moves like the boleo, sacada, and gancho in both close and open embrace. These classes will help solidify the foundation of your tango, provide material that is difficult and challenging, but also practical for social dancing at milongas. These classes can be repeated, as topics are continually changing, and we strongly encourage this series for dancers who have been dancing less than three years. It’s been our most popular series and it’s no wonder why.

Advanced / Level 2 :
Advanced / Level 2 classes are designed for those who have completed the bootcamp, taken intermediate classes, and have a solid grasp of essential tango technique. Students signing up for these classes should be very comfortable with, and be willing to demonstrate in front of the class, the ocho cortado, the left and right turn, a sacada, a boleo, and should be able to differentiate between a tango, vals, and milonga. These classes will be more intensive and will build upon the technique and material presented in intermediate classes. Topics will include (but are not limited to) boleo sequences, musicality, ganchos, vals and milonga specific steps, volcadas, sacada sequences, and more complicated moves like colgadas and/or single axis turns. If you have completed the intermediate series and are interested in taking advanced classes please check with the instructor to see if you are ready for the advanced class. This class is geared for dancers who have a solid grasp of the essential elements of tango and have the technique and skill required to build upon the material covered in intermediate classes.
